Welcome
to Marquette County!
Marquette County is a
cluster of neighboring communities separated only by towering pines,
majestic rivers and streams, and the unique characteristics each
has created for itself.
Our most prized possession
is the wilderness we share: the night skies illuminated by blazing
green northern lights, full moons reflecting diamonds in the snow,
lingering sunsets, waterfalls rushing to open waters, and waves
cresting against the shoreline of the greatest of the Great Lakes,
Lake Superior.
We're surrounded by our
past. Remnants of our mining heritage loom large against the horizon
while iron ore cars continue to travel to Lake Superior ore docks.
New shops displaying
artwork, restaurants serving whitefish, symphonies playing in restored
historic structures, and theaters highlighting local and national
performers are a sampling of the cultural amenities added to this
beautiful, historic place.

Marquette County Visitor Guide
Whether it's art and
architecture, festivals and events, fine dining, shopping or all
season adventures, it all awaits the year 'round visitor in Marquette
County.
Beautiful waterfalls,
lighthouses on magnificent Lake Superior, and numerous wilderness
trails highlight Marquette County in Spring. With waterfalls at
their peak, it's the ideal time for hiking and mountain biking.
A paved trail along Lake Superior and Presque Isle provides a perfect
means for walking, biking or rollerblading. The paved path in Ishpeming
takes you around the city and by Lake Bancroft and the beautiful
wooden gazebo.
Summer brings numerous
festivals which take place throughout Marquette County. Build sand
castles, walk on sandy, white beaches and take a musical performance
of "Beacon on the Rock", "Haywire", or "Points
North" at the Lake Superior Theater, visit the Ishpeming Rock
& Mineral Club's annual Swap/Sale that is held in conjunction
with the Renaissance Festival.
Marquette County also
boasts a variety of exciting annual sporting events. Participate
in the Subaru Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic, the Superior Bike
Fest, run the races in Marquette or Big Bay, play basketball in
the Negaunee Invitational, or just watch the many hockey, baseball
or soccer tournaments held each year.
One can smell crisp fresh
air and distinct aromas of fall. With the sound of rustling leaves
swirling in a kaleidoscope of color followed by after hours spectacular
ribbons or Northern Lights, show that the changing of the seasons
is an experience in itself!
As Mother Nature gives
us a blanket of snow, she sets the stage for numerous winter activities
and events. Thousands come out for the UP 200 Sled Dog Race, the
Subaru Noquemanon Ski Marathon, Marquette Mountain's Hill Climb
and Ishpeming's International Ski Jumping Tournament, to name a
few.
Snowmobiling enthusiasts
can play on over 500 miles of groomed trails. Ice fish, ski snowshoe
and dogsled in our blanket of white. Then finish off with an exhilarating
Finnish sauna.
Charter Boats offer trips
to Stannard Rock for memorable Lake Trout fishing, as well as Harbor
and Lighthouse cruises. Guide services are available year 'round
for historic and all season tours and wilderness adventures in the
mountains above Big Bay.
Challenging golf courses,
several museums, unique shopping districts, diverse antique shops
along with the area's many art studios and galleries round out your
visit. Don't miss Northern Michigan University and the Superior
Dome, the world's largest wooden domed stadium or the U.S. National
Ski Hall of Fame and Museum.
