Education in Marquette CountyLake Superior Partners in EducationThe Lake Superior Community Partnership supports the Lake Superior Partners in Education (LSPE), a group of concerned leaders whose mission is to prepare an upcoming workforce that aligns with current and future employment needs in Marquette and Alger Counties. The goals of LSPE include facilitating exposure and understanding of career and educational options for students, educators, parents and business and industry; to develop awareness and support among community members, students, parents and educators of career and technical education options that prepares students for career opportunities; LSPE provides a forum for business and education partners to connects and share information about employability skills, area employment and career opportunities. The Lake Superior Community Partnership also has a wide representation from the education sector on the Board of Directors to ensure the needs of our area's children are met. Higher EducationMarquette County is home to Northern Michigan University, a dynamic four-year, public, coeducational university which offers 180 degree programs to nearly 9,400 undergraduate and graduate students. Known for providing outstanding personal attention, more than 80 percent of NMU's 300+ faculty members have doctorates or the highest degree in their fields, and a hallmark of the NMU experience is that full-time faculty members teach at all levels - freshmen through graduate courses. Northern is also one of three universities in the state of Michigan to serve a community college role for its region. The 350-acre NMUcampus is known for its safe, clean, friendly and natural environment. The campus also offers 52 facilities including the Seaborg Science Complex, a state-of-the-art venue with more than two dozen laboratories, and the newly renovated Thomas Fine Arts and Art and Design buildings. Northern's campus also houses a university theater, an award-winning library, a university center, two art galleries, and a three-structure sports and recreation complex of which one is the Superior Dome, the world's largest wooden dome. NMU is one of the largest notebook computer campuses in the United States with all full-time students receiving either a ThinkPad or iBook as part of tuition. Education K-12Marquette County has eight school districts with approximately 10,000 students. Schools and business engage in unique partnerships to prepare students for work or education beyond high school. The nationally recognized REAL Program is one example. In this high-school class, students have created a community credit union; retail stores; e-commerce sites and more, which are operated by the students. Another award-winning program is the Red Dust program, which is a series of written and artistic works researching the history of our community.
